Progress of “Rodopa” Folklore Ensemble is associated with specificity, originality and emotion of the Rhodope folklore and with its melancholic sound - qualities that allow the construction of a wide repertoire. Audience meets with the first ensemble program back in 1963. The three units tightly bonded with creative and performance style offer strong syncretic art full of colors, polyphony and controlled rhythm. The entire repertoire is based on topics that were turned into scenographic incarnations of events, emotions and ideas illustrated by the songs and melodies of the Rhodopes.

  • The most famous songs: „Zaspalo e chelebiyche”, „Rufinka bolna legnala”, „Pile priz gora prehvorkna”, „Mesechinko lju, greylivka”, „ Ochi, ochi, pusti chorni ochi”, „Vchera si, maycho, otidoh”, „Bel veter due”, „Trista sa pushki puknali”, „”Dai si ma, maichinko”, „Strahile strashen voyvoda” etc.
  • Better known choreographic prductions: „Utro nad Rodopa (Dawn over Rhodopa)”, „Rosnala sitna Rositsa”, „Cvetya ot Rodopite (Flowers from the Rhodopes)”, „Gurbetchii”(“Migrant workers”), „Predoy”, „Kerkeli”, etc..
  • The repertoire includes more than 400 songs from all the sub-areas of the Rhodopes, mostly from the Middle Rhodopes. There are also songs from another folklore areas of Bulgaria. The folklore orchestra has in its repertoire over 30 instrumental pieces.  
  • Alive representatives of the folklore are: Valya Balkanska, Hristina Lyutova, Dimitriya Sedyankova, Elena Gribacheva, Stefka Marinska, Sonya Kaloferova, Zlatina Uzunova, etc. Soloists – Docho Grechkov, Mladen Koynarov, bagpipers – Dimitar Petkovski, Dimitar Grivnin, Georgi Musorliev, Georgi Kichukov, Petar Yanev, etc. Asen Diamandiev, Filip Kutev, Stefan Kanev, Nikolay Kaufman, Kosta Kolev, Krasimir Kyurkchiyski and Stefan Mutafchiyski make melodies to sound so emotionally and to sweep along the listeners with their voluntary and heartfelt interpretation.

People like Atanas Kapitanov, Nikola Kenov, Apostol Kisyov, Georgi Prodanov, Lazarin Kisyov, Verginiya Yankova, Kostadin Lyolev, choreographers Metodi Kutev, Asen Gavrilov, Ivan Todorov, Petar Angelov, Georgi Andreev, Todor Kyuchukov, Stoyan Bogdanov, Siyka Vasileva, Toma Karapaunov and directors Luben Groys, Yosif Venkov, Nedyalko Kovachev have a lasting imprint in the development of the ensemble.
